A few days ago, it was discovered that a patent was submitted by Apple for a "pen-based input system" which would allow the user to write on a touch screen. Previous patents from Apple have suggested that the tablet would rely solely on touch input, though this new patent suggests that a stylus may also be an option for users.
The patent discusses how Apple feels "a need exists for improving the way in which ink data is organized so as to facilitate the recognition process and also to improve the association of ink data to particular data entry fields." Apple suggests that its input system would recognize actual phrases rather than ink strokes from the pen, which is what previous systems have done.
